Turning 40 is a milestone, and with it comes shifts in both your body and mind. As I reflect on what I’ve learned, I realize there are things I wish I had known sooner—things that would have helped me navigate these changes with more grace and self-compassion. If you’re approaching 40 (or even if you’re well past it), I hope these insights help you embrace this stage of life with confidence and understanding.
1. Your Metabolism Changes—But You Can Adapt
In my 20s and 30s, I could eat what I wanted with little consequence. But as I neared 40, my metabolism slowed, and my body processed food differently. Hello menopause belly!! I learned that it’s not about dieting but about finding a way of eating that fuels me properly. Strength training, protein intake, and staying hydrated make a huge difference.
2. Sleep Becomes Non-Negotiable
Gone are the days of staying up late and going to work at 6:00 am. Quality sleep is essential for everything—hormone regulation, mood stability, and even weight management. Prioritizing a good sleep routine, reducing screen time before bed, and managing stress have made a world of difference. Oh, and it becomes much harder to get it.
3. Hormonal Changes Affect Everything
From energy levels to mood swings, hormonal shifts in your late 30s and 40s are real. I wish I had been more prepared for how fluctuations in estrogen, progesterone and testosterone would impact my body, emotions, energy levels, joints and skin. If you have been feeling off lately, it might be time to get your hormones tested.
4. Mental Clarity and Focus Shift
Brain fog and forgetfulness caught me off guard. (Again, helloooo menopause brain fog!) I used to pride myself on my sharp memory, but now, I have to be more intentional about staying mentally sharp. Prioritizing brain health through mindfulness, learning new things, and getting enough omega-3s has helped me stay focused.
5. Your Skin and Hair Will Change—And That’s Okay
Collagen production slows down, leading to changes in skin elasticity and hydration. I noticed more fine lines and dryness, but instead of fearing aging, I’ve embraced a skincare routine that nourishes my skin. The same goes for hair—so much of my hair has fallen out and the hair I still have has totally changed texture.

7. Your Body Needs More Recovery Time
Whether it’s from workouts or daily activities, recovery takes longer. Stretching, yoga, and active recovery are now essential parts of my routine. My doctor said, "you will have to recognize that this is your new normal." That hit hard.
8. Emotional Resilience Grows Stronger
One of the best things about turning 40 is the emotional maturity that comes with it. Things that once seemed like huge setbacks now feel like learning experiences. I’ve become more accepting of myself, more patient, and more attuned to what truly matters. And most of all, less F*cks to give.
9. Gut Health Becomes More Important
I never thought much about gut health until I noticed bloating, digestion issues, and food sensitivities creeping up. Forget Taco Bell at 2am! Learning about probiotics, fiber-rich foods, and how stress affects digestion has been a game-changer.
10. You Can Feel Better Than Ever—If You Take Care of Yourself
Aging isn’t something to fear—it’s something to embrace. With the right lifestyle choices, you can feel stronger, healthier, and more vibrant in your 40s than ever before. Movement, nutrition, self-care, and a positive mindset make all the difference.
If I could go back and tell my younger self anything, it would be this: Listen to your body, embrace the changes, and give yourself grace. Life after 40 is a new chapter—one filled with self-awareness, strength, and deeper well-being. And that’s something worth celebrating.
